ASNST-225 Haunted Media: Ghosts and Ghost Stories in East Asia

This course introduces ghosts and ghost stories in East Asia from the early medieval through the modern period. Students will undertake a cross-cultural and context-rich examination of the earliest records of encounters with ghosts, tales of the supernatural, poems and songs by or about ghosts, works of early modern drama in which ghosts appear on stage as messengers and lovers, as well as novels and horror films which give traditional ghost stories a contemporary twist in each of the target cultures of China, Japan, and Korea. We pay particularly close attention to the way ghosts and ghost stories have functioned as "media" through which each of these societies has narrated or staged its fears, anxieties, and hidden desires.
