ASNST-214 Like, Literally: Metaphor in Chinese Literature
This writing intensive course explores the cognitive and cultural dimensions of metaphor in both ancient and modern Chinese literature. Students will draw on the work of philosophers, cultural anthropologists, psychologists, linguists, and literary historians to analyze the use of metaphors and other figures of speech in ancient Chinese philosophy, as tools for making abstract ideas vivid and concrete and in modern Chinese short stories, as tools of artistic expression. No previous knowledge of China, the Chinese language, or Chinese literature is expected or required.
