ASNST-139 The Quran: The Scripture of Islam

How does an ancient scripture play a role in the daily lives of Muslims? Students study how the structure and literary features of the Quran produce meaning for its readers. We will also explore the functions that the Quran performs beyond the text such as in ritual, art, and architecture. Students learn the traditional methods that have been used to understand this rich text along with new, critical approaches by modern scholars, including feminist readings of the scripture and responses to alleged controversial verses.
