ARTH-305 Documentary Photography
This seminar examines key moments in the history of documentary photography. We will focus on the people and institutions that have used photography to shed light on social injustices and promote systematic change from the 19th century to the present day. And, we will trace how the practice of documentary has been defined, critiqued, and redefined in that time. Students will read foundational and new scholarship on documentary photography; examine physical media, including magazines and photo books, where documentary photographs appeared; and conduct research utilizing digital archives of documentary photographs.
