ARTH-274 Building Jerusalem: The Making and Remaking of a Holy City

Since its foundation, the city of Jerusalem has been claimed materially and spiritually by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. This course will, through its art and architecture, trace the complex history of Jerusalem from ca. 957 BCE to today’s divided city. The art and architecture of the city is contextualized in a way that speaks beyond the often-used and simplistic tripartite manner of constructing identity and history in the city.
