ARTH-212 Black Conceptualism
From the 1960s to the present, Black artists have played a leading role in developing the experimental techniques of conceptual art. Across the Americas, Europe, and Africa, Black artists moved beyond traditional mediums like painting and sculpture to create artworks in the form of typewritten texts, logical systems, philosophical treatises, historical archives, video installations, and street performances. These methods were tied to a wide range of themes: the critique of racist institutions, research into suppressed histories, explorations of postcolonial and diasporic identity, and the embodied experiences of gender and sexuality. Readings will be drawn from art history, artists’ writings, and interdisciplinary scholarship in Black Studies.
