ARTH-208 How to Read AI Images

AI images can be defined as infographics about datasets, or images that reproduce their own inputs. In “How to Read AI Images,” students will investigate the visual models, technologies, and principles that undergird AI-generated images and multimodal neural networks. Because so many operations in image-producing neural networks are based upon very old art historical models and methods – object identification and categorization, visual comparison, “realism” or similitude, and text-to-image relationships, to name a few – art historians and artists are uniquely positioned to critically assess computer envisioning systems. Through an investigation of how and what AI images represent, students will also engage with research on the broader social, political, and cultural impact of AI.
