ARCH-255 Archaeologies of Social Identity

This course will introduce students to how archaeology understands, investigates, and theorizes about past constructions of social identity. It will provide in-depth knowledge about past and present cultural variation in social identity. The course will cover how past communities created social expectations of behavior, expression, labor, and the accompanying materiality of these expectations. The course will discuss contemporary archaeology theory on social identity including, for example, gender, race, ethnicity, class, age, sexuality, status, and kinship. Students will learn how to critically examine representations of the past for consideration of variable identities and understand the important role of cultural heritage to the construction of identity as well.
