ANTHR-305 The Social Politics of Disaster
Anthropology as a discipline is uniquely positioned to make important contributions to the interdisciplinary field of disaster studies. In this course, we will use disaster as a lens through which to examine social relations and ethical responsibilities in a variety of cultural contexts around the globe. In order to develop their capacities as informed and engaged citizens, students will learn to analyze the political economy of disasters, critical discourses of aid and intervention, mobilizations of affect and alternative temporalities, and disaster as political allegory and opportunity.
