AFRST-306 Black Europe: Reclamation and Decolonization
Generations of African diasporic people contest their representation and belonging in contemporary Europe, while the politics surrounding social diversity, economic and social transformations are underway. Through social and political activism, scholarship, literature, film and the visual arts, Black Europeans reclaim colonial and other histories, and generate decolonial social portrayals and meanings. The rise of anti-immigrant and authoritarian politics and militarized borders are part of this changing social historical context. We examine social, political, and artistic dimensions of the environment and how it is perceived, lived and reimagined among Black Europeans in various countries, especially but not exclusively Italy, France, Germany and England.
