AFRST-267/367 Jazz Connections

An advanced jazz course that builds on the topics covered in Jazz Foundations (MUSIC 161), and examines the construction of the “jazz tradition” from a historiographical perspective. Considers how the development of jazz, and its construction in the context of educational institutions, both reflects and shapes concepts of race and gender in American culture. Includes an examination of the impact of jazz genres including hip hop, R&B, and gospel, and focuses on the international proliferation of jazz.
