SOC-310 Urban Ethnography

Using a combination of readings, in-class discussions, as well as hands-on ethnographic assignments, this course familiarizes students with an ethnographic research process. Students will initially be introduced to the historical context from which ethnographic methods emerged, before learning how to design an urban ethnographic research project, engage in participant observation, analyze fieldnotes, and effectively construct ethnographic narratives. Particular attention will be paid to discussing potential ethical dilemmas that ethnographers may face at every stage of the research process, including the role of one’s own unique, intersectional positionality in facilitating and hindering trust- building.
