RELST-259 Religion and Politics in Spinoza

Study of the Radical Enlightenment political theory of the philosopher Spinoza, who greatly influenced American Revolutionary thinking. We will pay special attention to Spinoza’s insistence on the privatization of religions in the modern polity and his invention of a civil religion to bolster democratic institutions and freedoms.
