PPOL-267 Utica in the Context of US History
Utica, New York, as a case study in US history. Examines its evolution from early post-Revolutionary "western frontier" settlement to center of industry and technological innovation, to early "rust belt" city and, more recently, to early center of refugee resettlement. Themes will include: transportation and communications, industrialization, demographic transformation, religion, politics, ethnic nationalism, labor history, xenophobia and racism, war and conflict, architecture, suburbanization, organized crime, political corruption, Urban Renewal, deindustrialization, urban decay. Readings and discussions will include relevant primary documents.
