PHIL-332 Philosophy of Global Justice
An exploration of theories and praxes of global justice: we will explore what our duties are to people anywhere on Earth, and how we can fulfill these duties. More specifically, we will explore ways of expanding the scope of traditional philosophical theories of justice—frequently confined to single democratic polities—with a view to responding to the challenges created by economic globalization. Among other topics, we will look at economic injustice, political injustice, gender injustice, ethnic and racial injustice, and environmental injustice. The course aims to empower participants to acquire a clearer understanding of what states of the world, as a whole, are morally better (or worse).

Our learning praxes will be informed by the idea that one cannot fully understand what justice is unless one interacts with actual instances of (in)justice. Working with a partner in the Utica region that the instructor (with support from the College) will provide, course participants will be expected to engage in community-based service activities.
