MUSIC-163 Caribbean Music

An exploration of the music of Cuba, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela with a focus on traditional music. Study of the musical elements, history, and cultural contexts of Caribbean music including son cubano, habanera, cumbia, merengue, calypso, reggae, bomba, and joropo. Topics include social class, gender roles, religion and syncretism, identity, and style. The course includes in-class, hands-on performances.
