MDRST-127 Medieval Monsters and Marvels

This course will study medieval Britain through its monsters, asking how these aberrant figures manifest the deepest fears and desires of their authors. From Arthurian legends through the world of the Crusades, supernatural figures like fairy lovers, evil giants, loyal werewolves, and cannibal kings negotiate English conceptions of gender, race, and nation. Texts (in modern English translation) may include Beowulf, the Lais of Marie de France, Sir Gawain and the Green KnightSir Orfeo, the King of TarsMandeville’s Travels, and Richard Coeur de Lion.
