CNMS-202 Asian Film and Religion

This course looks at the active relationship between religion and film to interrogate the idea that religion is something fixed, inward looking, and insulated from popular culture. Films are viewed in class to allow students to participate together in the viewing experience. Students examine how religious themes of belief, mythology, apocalypse, and more have inspired emerging directors from Hong Kong, Iran, South Asia, South Korea, Turkey, and other Asian regions. We investigate why reference to religious themes are significant in film and trace strategies directors have used to signal the religious, such as innovative use of cinematography and plot.
