ARTH-318 Epic Tales: Storytelling in South Asian Art

South Asia’s extensive corpus of epics, fables, popular tales, and romances have found spirited visual expression in the region’s history of art and architecture. This seminar will analyze artistic choice and the role that it plays in how words are visually translated into images. We will examine a range of case studies from a period spanning over two thousand years to understand how artists shaped space, unfurled time, and materialized heroes and villains in painting and sculpture. This class has no prerequisites.
