Examines the ways that culture — ideologies, symbols, rituals, art, music, film — influences the political sphere and becomes an arena for contentious politics. Special attention will be given to the fall Presidential election campaigns. Topics include revolutions and state-formation, electoral politics, the politicization of social problems, national identity and collective memory, and conflicts over contemporary art, television and popular culture.
