SOC-238 Sports and Society

Society’s love of sport is matched by the belief that it is an area not worthy of deeper inquiry or critique. This course aims to understand the paradoxical notion that sport is both one of most powerful and least respected institutions in the modern world. To do so we will work through theoretical approaches to better make sense of these paradoxes and to interrogate the way sport intersects with our understanding of issues like gender, race, politics, and the human body.
