RELST-314 Defining God: The Early Christian Councils
An in-depth, interactive exploration of the first four Ecumenical Councils of the Christian church, their political and historical background, and the conflicting theologies of the period. Students will engage in a several-week roleplaying exercise for the Council of Nicaea, taking on the character of one of the historical attendees, researching their doctrinal positions, and contributing their arguments to the conciliar debates. The second part of the course will cover the Councils of Constantinople, Ephesus, and Chalcedon, their theological debates, and relationship with the Council of Nicaea.
