RELST-231 Judaism and Social Justice
Jews have been at the forefront of many modern and contemporary social justice movements, including the labor movement, the struggle for civil rights, environmental justice, gender equality, and LGBTQ equality. Why? What does Jewish tradition actually say about social justice? After introducing students to key texts, tools, terms and relevant global, historical social movements, the second half of the course will dive more specifically into how liberal Jews and Judaism have engaged with these pressing issues. Students will have regular opportunities to study texts in pairs (chavruta); will engage in experiential learning through direct involvement with an active Jewish social justice organization; and complete a final project that furthers the aim of their assigned advocacy organization.
