MATH-506 Senior Seminar in Philosophical Foundations of Mathematics

The first two thirds of this seminar focuses on the set theoretical foundations of mathematics, including ordered sets, ordinal and cardinal numbers, and the classic set paradoxes. Students will be given definitions for which they must find examples and theorems for which they must find proofs. The last third of the course focuses on classic papers in the philosophy of mathematics by such authors as Bishop George Berkeley, Immanuel Kant, Georg Cantor, Bertrand Russell, Kurt Gödel and A. J. Ayer. Final paper required.
