LIT-226 Oh Brave New World: Climate Change and Literature
The question of what benefit literature can actually effect in the world has always been a vexed one. The question of what we can do in the face of anthropogenic climate change is equally complex. This course surveys mostly contemporary novels, memoirs, and poetry about climate and our relationship to the planet and our future, exploring the role literary texts might play in addressing the greatest crisis we face. We will necessarily also examine issues of social and environmental justice. Authors may include Octavia Butler, Margaret Atwood, Kim Stanley Robinson, Amitav Ghosh, Barbara Kingsolver, Bill McKibben, and others. (SSIH)
