HSPST-367/467 Nueva York: Contemporary Literature and Art
The course studies the literary and artistic production of Spaniards, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans and Central Americans in New York City from the civil rights movement of the 1960s to the 21st Century. Students will analyze primary sources to explore multiple aspects of identity: national, cultural, racial, linguistic, generational, Caribbean, Latinx and Nuyorican. Primary materials include short stories, novels, memoirs and poetry, and visual art and performing arts, when available. Secondary readings provide the historical and theoretical framework for analysis of cultural production.
