HSPST-360/460 The Generations of 1898 and 1927

This course will be a study of the ideas, trends and new concepts of Spanish literature at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, spurred on by historical challenges (loss of Empire) and social unrest (political upheaval) in Spain. José Ortega y Gasset’s La deshumanización del arte will serve as a theoretical bridge between the two generations. We will also question the validity of these categories and problematize the anointing of literary generations.
