HSPST-321/421 Representing Domestic Labor in Latin America

Explores representations of domestic labor in Latin America from the mid-19th century to date, investigating the figure of the domestic servant in culture as the nexus where not only forms of oppression -generally around the female subject- are realized, but also where notions of the feminine are worked, subsequently contaminating language, reordering post-emancipation citizenship hierarchies, authorizing the intellectual voice, and exploring social crises in the neoliberal era. This course covers a variety of domains, such as short story, theatre, novel, and visual arts.
