HSPST-318/418 Fascistas vs Antifascistas: Literatures, Cultures and Politics in the Spanish Civil War

It is difficult to understand modern Spain without looking back to its past, to the far-reaching traumatic years of its Civil War and the later fascist dictatorship. The conflict went beyond the frame of a civil confrontation to the battlefield of armies and volunteers brought to Spain by ideologies whose rhetoric and symbols echo in today’s political debate. This course on the Spanish Civil War and its legacy focuses on the propaganda and testimonies of its protagonists along with the contemporary debates on the collective memory of the war. Further, it offers the possibility to get familiarized to Spanish culture, literature, and politics through a variety of fictional, documentary, and theoretical texts, including novel, theater, poetry, press, visual arts, and cinema.
