HIST-377 Violence, Law, and Justice in the Middle Ages
Telling a prisoner that you’re going to "get medieval" on them does not have positive connotations. At the same time, medieval texts like Magna Carta are held up as having made fundamental contributions to liberal political theory. This research seminar invites students to explore key issues in the development of legal thought and practice in the medieval West that help us understand how various communities and institutions addressed the problem of violence, administered justice, and created social and religious order through law.
