HIST-263 Music, Science & Power
This course explores a new history of knowledge, power, and music in early modern Europe, by interpreting musical instruments not merely as tools of music and art, but also as tools of knowledge and power. Central themes will include the reciprocal relationship between technology and musical practice, the use of musical instruments as models in natural and human science, and the political dimensions of musical sound and rhythm. Students will explore the multiple roles and identities of musical instruments across Europe, using written, visual, and audible sources and employing scholarly perspectives from the history of science and science and technology studies (STS), the history of political culture, and musicology.
