HIST-214 Revolutions

The last quarter of the eighteenth century, an epoch-making cultural breakthrough occurred opening the way for the elaboration of secular political thinking. Compares the American Revolution (1775-1783), the French Revolution (1789-1799), the Haitian (Saint-Domingue) Revolution (1791-1804), and the Spanish American revolutions (1808-1825). What were the causes, content, and consequences of each? Who led the movements? What roles did various social groups play? How were persons recruited and mobilized ? How did those in power respond to challenges from below and from outside?
