HIST-211 History of Africa from 1800 to the Present

Examines African History from 1800 to the present. Students encounter the complexity and diversity of peoples, cultures, and histories across the African continent, with an emphasis Africa’s centrality to world history. Topics include the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism and its legacies, Africa during the world wars, decolonization, African nationalist movements, the rise and fall of Apartheid, and Africa during the global war on terror. Readings and sources include diverse primary sources, films, music, material objects, and canonical works of secondary literature.
