HIST-140 Music and Science from the Monochord to the Synthesizer

The course examines the historical intersections of music and science, from Pythagoras, who discovered the proportions of consonance in ancient Greece, to Robert Moog, who invented the synthesizer in the 1960s. Our interdisciplinary approach will include mathematics, medicine and physiology, physics, and the arts. Ultimately, in exploring the boundaries of science and music, we will explore our knowledge of ourselves in the natural world.
