GOVT-346 Liberalism and the Left

Examination of the political thought of both progressive liberalism and the radical left, stressing the foundational debates. Explores left-liberalism, social democracy, democratic socialism, communism, left-anarchism, environmentalism, anti-racism, anti-colonialism, and feminism, as well as key thinkers such as Rousseau, Marx, Bakunin, Du Bois, Dewey, Leopold, Rawls, de Beauvoir, and Fanon. Students consider debates over the nature of justice, freedom, equality, emancipation, class, race, gender, empire, and capitalism at the heart of liberal and radical political thought.
