FRNCH-439 A la mode: Fashion and the Body in French literature and culture, 19th-century to present ÂÂ
This course examines how representations of the (adorned) body have evolved in French literature and culture. From Zola to Duras to Godard, we explore modern fashion’s emergence as a constitutive element of culture and society. Topics include gender and embodiment; politics and fashion; capitalism and modernity; race and identity; design and aesthetics; and Paris as fashion capital. Sources include literature, film, fashion journals, advertisements, and other forms of visual art. Course may include off-campus visits.
