FRNCH-348 Life on Reels: Art and Reality in Contemporary French Cinema

Compared to action or fantastic cinema, contemporary French cinema privileges understatement and slow depictions of complicated “real life” events. We examine the complex transformation of identifiable life situations in recent French films and the relationship between life and its representations. Introduction to French cinema history, film terminology, and common cinematographic techniques followed by study of feature films and documentary by  filmmakers such as Jacques Audiard, Agnès Jaoui, Abdekadif Kechiche, Gilles Lellouche, and Agnès Varda.
