CLASC-203 Putting down roots: Environmental Approaches to Classical Antiquity
This course introduces students to the literature and theories used to interpret the complex relationship between the ancient Greeks and Romans and their environments. discussion topics include: the problem of defining nature cross-culturally; environmental determinism in classical thought and its legacy in modern racism; deforestation and its impact upon ancient imaginations; natural disasters; the unsustainable practices of ancient imperialism; the fall of the Roman Empire and its causes; and the impact of Christianity and Islam upon classical conceptions of nature.
