ASNST-330 Muslim Empires of Asia

For much of the early modern period, large parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe were ruled by Muslim dynasties from their capitals in modern-day Turkey, Iran, India, and Pakistan. The Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals ruled over populations with diverse languages, religions, and cultures, offering us a unique perspective on how people elsewhere thought about issues important today: political and religious authority, hierarchies and social structures, protest and dissent, piety and power, economics and environmental change, multiculturalism and diversity, law and ethics, art and commerce, as well as gender and sexuality. In the course we explore the historiography of these empires together with primary sources including histories, political treatises, religious texts, poetry, and paintings.
