ASNST-225 Dank Memes for Tang Dynasty Teens: Ghost Stories, Pop Music, and Social Media in Medieval China

This course introduces various forms of "social media" in medieval China. More specifically, it examines the circulation of ghost stories, tales of the supernatural, poems full of gossip and innuendo, and popular songs on the physical border between the civil service examination district and the pleasure quarters of 9th Century Chang'an (modern Xi'an, China), then the capital of the Tang dynasty and one of the most densely populated and diverse cities in the world at the time. We begin with a virtual tour of Chang'an and end with the after-lives of its literature in later short stories and films.
