ASNST-214 Like, Literally: Metaphor in Chinese Literature

 

This writing intensive course explores the semantic, cognitive, and cultural dimensions of figurative language in Chinese literature. Students will draw on the work of philosophers, cultural anthropologists, psychologists, linguists, and literary historians to analyze the use of metaphors and other figures of speech in ancient Chinese philosophy, medieval poetry, and modern short stories. No previous knowledge of China, the Chinese language, or Chinese literature is expected or required.
