ARTH-219 Painting in South Asia
This course explores the history of painting in South Asia from prehistory to the present. We will examine a range of painting traditions, including the murals of rock-cut Buddhist shelters and Hindu temples, narrative paintings in sacred texts, the art of storytelling in miniature manuscripts and royal court painting, and painting in the colonial and postcolonial periods. Students will learn to identify, analyze, and historically situate paintings from diverse regions, and of styles, schools, and spaces, both secular and sacred.
