This course examines the development of complex societies, including the Aztec and Maya, in ancient Mesoamerica. We will trace the development of these civilizations, from early hunter-gatherer societies, to the first cities of the New World, through the rise of the Empires that clashed with invading European colonists. The class emphasizes the role of indigenous peoples and their history in shaping contemporary Mesoamerica.
