AMST-118/218 The Broadway Musical

An exploration of Broadway musical theater from its early forms to the present and the main conventions through which a variety of musical styles (from opera to hip hop) has been used to structure narrative. Topics include the impact of Broadway on American culture and how musicals reflect the time period in which they were created. Includes artists such as George M. Cohan, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Bob Fosse, Stephen Sondheim, Jeanine Tesori, and Lin-Manuel Miranda and musicals like Showboat, Oklahoma!, West Side Story, Hair, Cabaret, A Chorus Line, The Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Wicked, Fun Home, Ain’t Too Proud, and Hamilton.
