AMST-150 Hamilton College & Social Justice

We will explore ways that Hamilton College has sought to engage cultural differences, and stand on the principles of justice for the underrepresented and oppressed populations — and ways the College has struggled in these same attempts. This course is designed to examine the history of the College and reflect on social justice issues of the day: Native displacement, American slavery and its abolition, the struggle for women’s rights, co-education and the founding of Kirkland College, civil rights, the anti-apartheid movement, and LGBTQ equality. We will also study the lives and work of various alums, and faculty through the College's history, drawing on resources of local community and the archives of the College.
