PHIL-355 Contemporary Philosophy

In this course we will examine some of the key ideas, tools, and applications of contemporary analytic philosophy. The course is divided into two parts. The first part examines the foundations of contemporary metaphysics, focusing on the issues of existence, possibility, necessity, properties, identity, time, and persistence. The second part focuses on the applications of these metaphysical tools to issues of broader concern, including personhood, consciousness, the extended mind, artificial intelligence, the nature and agency of groups, collectives and institutions, race, and gender.
