MUSIC-246/346 Social Justice, Activism and Artistry in Group Singing: Exploring Identity and Meaning in Choral Music

A study of choral music ranging from the medieval chants of Hildegard von Bingen to the social justice songs of Sweet Honey in the Rock, with emphasis on the a cappella music of women. Consideration of traditional and emerging choral styles in Western art music, African American music, and folk-inspired music from Bulgaria, Cuba, Finland, Indonesia, Jordan and Scandinavia. Topics explore the role of choral music in Civil rights and Women’s rights activism, historical contexts of artistic expressions, and contemporary responses to earlier choral traditions. Active listening and text analysis.
