HIST-259 African History to 1800

Examines African History from Ancient Egypt to 1800. Students encounter the complexity and diversity of peoples, cultures, and histories across the African continent, with an emphasis Africa’s centrality to world history. Topics include early civilizations, human migrations, great medieval empires, the diffusion and role of religions including Islam, trade and economic networks, the transatlantic slave trade, and the early stirrings of colonialism. Readings and sources include oral epics, canonical works of secondary literature, music, art, and material objects.
