HIST-226 History of European Thought: Knowledge and Community, 1350-1800

Welcome to the Republic of Letters – a community that bore witness to revolutions in thought, transforming European intellectual, scientific, and political traditions. Study of canonical texts written by iconoclastic thinkers and consideration of new communications technologies like the printing press transformed communication and previous consensus. Europe’s global engagement posed challenges with implications for trust in reason, with experimentation, and the senses. Ideas surrounding personhood and liberty were inspired by new new thinkers, including women, Jews, and former slaves.
