HIST-210 Musical Instruments in Early Modern Europe: A History of Knowledge, Power, and Music

This course uncovers a new history of musical instruments, imagining them not merely as tools of music and art, but also as tools of knowledge and power. Central themes include technology and musical practice, the use of musical instruments in science, and the politics of sound and rhythm. Students use written, visual, and audible sources and employ interdisciplinary perspectives from the histories of science, political culture, and musicology.
